Year 1

Year 1

The Year 1 team are Mrs Glass (Class Teacher), Miss Wiseman (Class Teacher and Phase Lead), Mrs Clay (Class Teacher) and Miss Foster (TA).

In Year 1, PE happens every day between 12:55 – 1:30 (The only exception to this is Wednesday).
In Phonics, we have recapped Chapter 3 and we have moved onto Chapter 4a. We will then be consolidating what we have learnt ready for Phonics Screening in July.
In Maths, we will be focusing on our number bonds to 10, before moving onto bonds to 20. We have begun looking at the 2x tables and we are becoming increasingly confident in counting in 2s. We are continuing to run pre-teaches and interventions where possible, to close gaps in the children’s learning.
In Science, we are looking at our changing world, and how the world changes throughout the different seasons. In Spring, we begin to focus on using our 5 senses and complete different activities using these senses. We then move on to materials where we learn about the properties of materials we use and see in our day to day life. Our summer topics are animal antics and plant detectives. We focus this time on more local animals. We explore different wildlife around the school, in this unit we plan on visiting the local reservoir.

In Computing in Autumn we look at technology all around us, identifying different pieces of technology as well as learning how to log onto the computer. We further look at programming, where we learn to use and navigate a BeeBot. In Spring, our unit is digital painting, where we will be using paint to learn to draw lines and improve our mouse control. We then move back onto programming, where we begin to programme an animation on ScratchJr. In the Summer, we look at grouping data where we sort things into groups and provide them with our own labels. Our final unit is digital writing, where we learn how to use a keyboard with more accuracy.

Our first two topic units are Geography, where we focus on the world. This consists of learning about the 5 oceans and the 7 continents. We use that knowledge in our next term to learn about Australia in more depth. We learn about different Australian Landmarks and some of its unique features. In Spring, we start by learning about what History is. Our theme is Kings and Queens, which is our first History module. We learn about important Kings and Queens and learn some important vocabulary. We aim to visit a home for one of these Kings and Queens on a school trip. We then, learn about Bevendean, in our final Geography topic, and plan on exploring the local area and making the most of where we are located. We hope to visit the reservoir together in Spring. Our final topic of the school year is ‘Then&Now’ where we compare two periods in History looking at the similarities and differences between the two.
