Year 2

Our P.E is on Friday. Please make sure your child has a full P.E kit that is named and in a bag at the start of each half term. 

Our Topics In the Autumn term, our topic is Africa. Our focus this term is Geography. We learn how identify Africa on a map as well as the other six continents and the five oceans too. We use apps like google street view to give the children a perspective of where Brighton and the UK are in relation to the rest of the world. We also learn the physical features of Africa, such famous landmarks, cities and buildings. This then allows the children then to look into the human geography of the continent by comparing their own lives to a child from Africa. The children have the opportunity to visit Drusilla’s where they take part in an African workshop.

In the Spring term, our topic is The Great fire of London. Our focus this term is History. We begin by the children learning the different London landmarks, then move into learning about how the plague affected the city and the rest of Europe. Finally, we finish by learning about the key people and events involved in creating the Great fire of London in 1666. The children explore the land marks of London on a coach trip. 

In the Summer term, our topic is Explorers. Our focus is a mix of Geography and History. We begin by exploring the school and mapping out the playgrounds while using a key to identify important sites. Then, we focus on the lives of inspirational explorers who overcame adversity in different ways such as Mae Jemison, Neil Armstrong and Matthew Henson. 

Homework is set half termly and children who achieve the target score get a reward in school. While homework should be independent, please support your child as appropriate. 

Daily reading at home is also part of our homework expectations. Your child’s Times Tables Rockstars log in was stuck into their homework book at the start of the year so they can practice their 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s.
